COVID & Circulation Policies

The potential for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus which causes COVID-19) to survive on print and other library materials has necessitated changes in circulation policies. Namely:

  • Materials returned to Circulation will be quarantined for 5 days before being made available for further check-out.
  • Unfortunately, this includes reserve items. Accordingly, their loan period has been extended from 3 hours to 1 day.

To protect the health of library personnel (which includes law students, full-time staff, and teaching faculty):

  • Moscow Circulation Desk will only be open Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM.
  • Please remain behind all barriers when interacting with personnel at Circulation.
  • We will wear masks when interacting with you and expect the courtesy to be returned.

Fines & Fees

Fines are $0.30 a day up to a maximum of $10.50 per item. Lost items have a charge of $50.00 for the item and a $20.00 processing fee. Fines for recalled books are $2.00 per day up to a maximum of $20.00.

Fines for reserve materials are $2.00 per hour or partial hour for overdue items, maximum $20.00. There are no fines for electronic reserve materials.

You can renew items online through your library account.

  • Click on your name in the top right corner of the window and select "My Loans"
  • Hit "Renew" next to the item you'd like to renew, or select "Renew All"
  • If successful, a message giving the new due date should appear

You can also renew items by phone or by visiting the Circulation Desk.

Summit/Interlibrary Loan

The University of Idaho Law Library remains committed to getting materials needed by patrons and has two systems in place for doing so, Summit* and Interlibrary Loan.** However, the current public health situation has drastically reduced our and other libraries' ability to participate in both programs.

Boise: Interlibrary loan service is temporarily suspended, with plans to resume in the coming weeks. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Moscow: May be able to fill your Summit request for print materials; may be able to fill your interlibrary loan request for electronic resources. See our website for information about placing requests.

*Summit is a service that allows University of Idaho affiliates to borrow books from other libraries in the Orbis Cascade Alliance consortium of northwestern academic libraries. Use this option if it is available for the item you require AND you are based in Moscow. If you are based in Boise, you should opt instead for an interlibrary loan (see below.)

**Interlibrary loan is a service through which the Law Library will make its best effort to borrow an item (book, journal article, etc.) from a library outside the Orbis Cascade Alliance. Use this option when Summit is not available for the item you require OR if you are based in Boise. (Unfortunately, Summit couriers do not travel to Boise.)

Read more about these services and how to place requests on our website.
